Different Types of Inground Pools

Imagine walking out your back door to a new inground pool. Your backyard is instantly turned into an oasis where you will enjoy countless hours of mental and physical relaxation, including gatherings of family and friends, private romantic evening swims, sunset reflections on your own terrace, and those quiet relaxing mornings poolside. Adding a pool to your home comes with many benefits. If you know that you want to spend the warmer months floating on a raft in a pool at your home, and are ready to take the leap, the next thing you need to do is start planning for that perfect pool. There are different types of inground pools for you to choose from and what you select really depends on your family’s wants and needs.

We are here to help. We are going to review some of the most popular types of inground pools offered and other things you should think about when selecting the swimming pool of your dreams.

Things to Consider When Selecting Your Inground Pool

Inground pools are one of the most popular types of pools, as you can really customize the style, shape, size, depth, color, etc. when you add a custom inground pool to your home. An inground pool is built permanently into the ground with the top sitting flush with the lawn, they are literally in the ground. There are different types of inground pools to choose from and you need to consider things like size, shape, materials used, and more.

Let’s dive into some of the choices you get to make to make your pool your own.

  • Size: We are going to start with the first thing you are probably thinking about when it comes to selecting your new pool, the size that you need. To choose the size of pool that will be right for your home and family you need to consider who the main users will be and how often they will be using the pool. Think about if your family size will change in the next few years. What will be the main purpose of your pool (i.e. volleyball, swimming laps, wading, etc.)? How often do you intend to host pool parties? What size pool will fit in your outdoor space? Your local pool expert will be able to help you determine the size of pool that will be best for you and your family, the space you have available, and what you intend to use it for.
  • Depth: The depth of an inground pool can vary based on your preference. For example, if you want a dive-able deep end or just a constant depth pool. When it comes to different types of inground pools, understanding the main swimmers is key. As we mentioned above, the size and depth will depend on who is using the pool and for what purposes. Know those things before going to buy your new pool. The average height for men in the United States is 5 feet 9 inches, and the average height for women is 5 feet 4 inches. Consider that and the height of all the users when selecting the depth of your pool, but the choice is really up to you.
  • Shape: Inground pools can come in really any shape that you want. The space that the pool is going in and its main purpose will likely play a major role in deciding what shape if right for your home. Some of the most popular pool shapes are: rectangular, oval or round, kidney shaped, the figure-8, multi-sided pools (pools with straight edges similar to an octagon), l-shaped, and completely custom shaped. If you want a pool that is shaped like the first initial of your last name, you can do that. The possibilities are really endless.
  • Type: When it comes to different types of inground pools, one of the most difficult decisions you have to make is what type you want: vinyl or fiberglass. The type of pool, like all of your other decisions, depends on your preference. Price, shape, color, etc. can all play a role in what you select.
    • Vinyl: Vinyl liner pools are built with your choice of heavy-duty polymer wall panels or heavy-duty galvanized steel wall panels. Vinyl liner pools have 100s of different liner colors and patterns to choose from. Every 12 to 15 years when the liner has to be replaced you can completely update the look of your pool.
    • Fiberglass: Fiberglass pools can also come in different colors and finishes. Fiberglass pools are unique in that they do not have a liner. That is a huge benefit. Most liners will have to be replaced about every 12 to 15 years. Fiberglass pools are extremely durable and will provide you and your family with a lifetime of carefree pool enjoyment.
