Popular Yard Games to Spruce up Your Next Party

After a dip in your pool, soak in the spa, meal in your outdoor kitchen, how can you keep your guests of all ages entertained? Well, that’s easy. Yard games may be just what you are looking for. There are some popular yard games that will spruce up your next party and keep your friends and family wanting to come back for more.

Some of the below games you may already have, some you may not have ever heard of, and others may be on your list as something you already want to add to your outdoor entertaining space. Whatever the case, the below yard games are some of the most popular.

  • Cornhole: Cornhole is, and continues to be, one of the most popular games that you can add to your outdoor space. If you’ve somehow never played, it’s essentially a bean bag toss with your goal to toss the bean bag into the hole. Cornhole consists of 2 boards on opposite ends where teammates and opponents take turns tossing the bags back and forth and getting points for hitting the board and/or going in the hole.
  • Bocce: Bocce is a classic yard game that has been around for a really, we mean really, long time. Bocce has roots in the Roman Empire. A game of bocce can be played with as few as two people and as many as eight. To play a game of bocce you need a yard, one pallino (small target ball), and eight larger balls of two different colors. The goal of the game is to be the team with their balls closest to the pallino. You can really play the game with whatever rules to you decide on. It likely will depend on the players, and your yard space.
  • Disc Throwing Game: Also known as Kan Jam, this game is very easy and a family-friendly lawn game that’ll get participants moving a bit. Make sure there is enough space for people to chase a frisbee around without running into things. For this game, there are two person teams, one person from each team on opposite sides. People take turns throwing a flying disk to the opposite side with the goal to make it into large “cans”. Teammates can provide an assist, making this yard game one that keeps everyone on their toes.
  • Wooden Yard Tumbling Tower: If you have every played Jenga, the outdoor yard version of this game is basically the same, only the blocks are much larger. If you are looking for a game that doesn’t require a lot of physical activity, this could be perfect. Each person takes their turn removing a block and placing it on top of the stack. This continues until someone causes the tower to fall over.
  • Kubb: Kubb is a lawn game where the objective is to knock over wooden blocks by throwing wooden batons at them. Kubb can be described as a combination of bowling and horseshoes. This game dates back to the time of the Vikings and can keep your guests of all ages entertained for hours. It is more difficult than you may think.
  • Ladder Ball: This is a rather new game, compared to some of the others we have reviewed. Also called ladder toss, monkey ball, ladder golf, ball rope, and more, this game is played by throwing bolas (two balls connect by a string), onto a ladder. Sounds easy right? It actually requires some serious skill and precision, and is really fun to play and/or watch.
  • Roundnet: Another rather new game, commonly known as spikeball, this is a net sport. The game is played between two teams, usually with two players each. Players initially line up around a small trampoline-like net at the start of a point. The game starts with a serve from one team to another, and teams alternate hitting the ball back to the net, and ends when the ball falls to the ground or an infraction occurs.

Some other popular yard games are volleyball, yard bowling, croquet, yard dice, yard dominoes, horseshoes, bucket ball, wiffle ball, badminton… We could go on and on reviewing yard games to spruce up your next party and keep you and your guests entertained; however, we will stop here for now.
