Fall is in the air, which likely means, you are, or will soon be, trying to keep leaves out of your pool. Whether you have a trees in your backyard or the wind helps to bring your neighbor’s leaves into yours, the amount of debris in your pool can greatly increase at this time of year. The warm Northwest Ohio and Erie, PA autumn breezes can mean extra work for you to try to maintain a clean and inviting pool. We are here to help with some tips for how to get leaves out of your pool, if they can’t help but to take a dip in it.
How to Get Leaves Out of your Pool
With the right pool cover and/or leaf guard, you can prevent many leaves from making their way into your water, but you will likely not be able to avoid them all. Leaf guard covers usually easily attach to your pool on top of your existing cover with grommets and remove just as quickly. These guards help keep falling debris out of your pool and off your cover. If leaves are in your swimming water, you can use the below techniques to help get them out of your pool so you can keep swimming as long as possible this fall.
- Leaf Rake: A leaf rake is similar to a normal pool skimmer, but it has a deeper bag-like net, instead of the flat net regular skimmers have. The extra netting allows the rake to collect and hold more debris than other pool skimming devices. Leaf rakes are also designed to allow the water to pass through easier when there are leaves in it than other skimmers do. This helps to prevent the water from creating a wave in front of a leaf skimmer pushing the leaves away from it. Using a leaf rake will allow you to collect a lot of leaves all at once, helping you to get the leaves out of your pool in no time.
- Leaf Eater: A leaf eater is similar to a pool vacuum and another great device to help you get leaves off the bottom of your pool. Leaf eaters are sometimes referred to as leaf baggers or leaf gulpers, as well. The leaf eater has jets in it that force water through a deep net bag. This creates a suction that will lift debris off the bottom of your pool and collect them in the attached bag. The jets are powered by water from your garden hose or the booster pump of your automatic pool cleaner. The jets will push in and store a lot of leaves and other debris before it needs dumping. A leaf eater will help you get leaves out of your pool and can remove a lot in a short amount of time.
- Leaf Canister: Leaf canisters can be added to your automatic pool cleaner or filtering system and allows your pool to filter out leaves with little to no work needed by you. Leaf canisters generally attach to your pump system and help to prevent leaves from getting into your filter and pump before damaged occurs. Leaf canisters are simple to maintain; set them up and attach them, run your pool system as normal, and empty the canister as you regularly would a filter basket.
As previously mentioned, the best way to get leaves out of your pool, is to not allow them in in the first place. Planting the right trees around your pool, for the Northeast Ohio and Erie, PA weather can help. Also, the proper pool cover and an added leaf guard can assist to lessen your pool maintenance this fall and allow you to enjoy your pool a little longer without the added work.
