Enjoy your Hot Tub this Summer by Cooling it Down

When the heat kicks up to full blast in Northeast Ohio and Erie, PA, the thought of taking a dip in a steamy hot tub, may not be as appealing as it is in the colder months. Aches and pains don’t just go away because the snow does, and most hot tub owners want to use their spas year-round, regardless of the temperature outdoors. You can continue to enjoy your hot tub this summer by cooling it down a little.

Safe Hot Tub Temperature

Everyone likes to enjoy their spa at different temperatures. Some people like them very warm, others prefer lukewarm, and there are those, particularly in the summer, who look for a cooler relief. Adjusting and controlling the temperature of your hot tub is generally very easy and handled by the click of a button on the control panel.

The CDC advises that hot tub water temperature should not exceed 104 ̊F (40 ̊C). This recommendation exists to help you avoid potential health issues. Normal body temperature is typically 98.6°F and if your body temperature exceeds 103 ̊F you could be in danger of several medical issues, including hyperthermia.

Most hot tubs can go as low as 60°F and as high as 106°F. This varies based on hot tub, but there is normally a large temperature range for you to choose from. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission, advises that a hot tub water temperature is best between 100°F and 102°F.

Tips for Cooling it Down

When it is hot outside, it can be unbearable, and the thought of getting in hot water, may not be ideal. You can enjoy your hot tub this summer by cooling it down and reducing the temperature.

As we mentioned above, the temperature of a hot tub can be controlled by the control panel. When it’s really hot outside, lowering the hot tub temperature may not actually change the water temperature very much. If you want to enjoy your hot tub this summer by cooling it down, you may need some extra help. Here are some easy tips to help you cool down your spa:

  1. Keep your hot tub temperature set at 85°F, or lower, during the warmer months.
  2. Set your spa in sleep and economy modes, if your hot tub has this functionality.
  3. Add shade around your spa. Shade makes a big difference, and the surface of the cover can drop 20° F with proper shade.
  4. Try freezing water in empty containers, like gallon milk jugs, and putting them in the spa.
  5. Add cold water to your hot tub with a garden hose.
