Differences Between On-Ground and Above Ground Pools | New Year, New Pool?

Happy New Year! Do your New Year’s resolutions and goals include a plan for adding a new pool to your home’s backyard oasis? Yes, we know that it is January in Northeast Ohio and Erie, PA; however, now is the perfect time to start planning for that outdoor makeover you have been dreaming about in 2023. While the days of you floating on a raft in your future pool may seem very far away right now, they will be here before you know it. Have you decided on what kind of pool you want to add to your space? You have options and most people don’t really understand what they are other than having an inground pool or not. We are going to review the differences between on-ground and above ground pools, so you can make a pool buying decision that is best for you and your family.

Differences Between On-Ground and Above Ground Pools

As mentioned above, most people don’t realize that they have multiple options when it comes to selecting a pool. You may decide that an inground pool isn’t the best choice for your home, but that doesn’t mean you are limited on your possibilities. There are two other common pool choices that many people tend to group together as the same, but they are not.

Below we take a look at the differences between on-ground and above ground pools. We know, for many of you it may be a shock that they are two different things, but we will walk you through how they vary, so you can decide which type will be best for your home.

Above Ground Pools

Above ground pools are very popular for homeowners who don’t want to or can’t install a more permanent inground pool in their space. These pools are installed at ground level, where the entire pool extends above the ground. You have likely seen this type of pool in some shape or size.

These pools are more inexpensive than inground or on-ground pools and are much easier to install, as they don’t require heavy equipment. Above ground pools usually come in pool kits and can be assembled by the homeowner and can typically be up and running within days of purchase. They can be installed in areas where it may be difficult to install other types of pools and can also be dismantled and moved if needed.

Many families select this type of pool because of they are less expensive, fit in places other pools cannot, and are rather easy to install. Some people don’t choose these pools because they have shorter lifespan than the other pool choices and they don’t find them as visually appealing.

On-Ground Pools

These pools are exactly what they sound like; a pool that is partially installed in the ground and partially above ground. On-ground pools are also known as semi-inground pools. They are made from the same materials as inground pools, but aren’t fully in the ground; thus, they give you the look and feel of an inground pool, but have a lower cost and faster installation.

These pools can be perfect for backyards that have uneven ground, steep hills, slopes, or any other features that would make a traditional pool installation challenging or nearly impossible. Many pool owners also find that the on-ground option allows them to meet city, town, or neighborhood pool height requirements and restrictions.

People select on-grounds pools because of the reasons mentioned above and their aesthetic. When it comes to differences between on-ground and above ground pools and why some people go with above ground instead, it is usually because on-ground pools cost more and are more permanent.
